genericDamienhirst was published in January, 2001, whilst foundry was still based in the West Country. We initially distributed it to artist's bookshops in places like the Arnolfini and ICA. A particularly stupid collector bought two copies at Zwemmer's, Charing Cross, and got in touch with the White Cube to check the provenance. Within days, Hirst's solicitors Beveridge Milton had sent us a writ demanding all copies be destroyed, all profits be given up, and all legal costs be covered.
It was the last demand that put the fear in us; we faxed the letter to any solicitor prepared to read it for free. The verdict was unanimous- you can't win. Settle. |

| We wrote a letter back refusing all demands but agreeing to change the name to genericNamedshirti. 22 copies had been printed in our bedroom by this point; all subsequent copies have been printed with the anagram, although some have the original title on the frontispiece. We never heard back from Milton or Beveridge. How To Make Friends and Influence People, a collaborative work by Elliott and Hirst - originally featuring a fax of the letter - documents the fracas. |
